It’s not just high-risk activities or sports that cause concussions. Everyday life can unexpectedly catch you by surprise with a head injury causing a concussion, disrupting your way of living and happiness. At Elevation Health, our Therapists are specially trained to help you recover quickly.
Our goal is to make the recovery process simple, clear, and timely so you can focus on getting better in the fastest, safest, and most complete way possible.
What is a Concussion?
A concussion can be simply defined as a disruption in neurological functioning following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. This causes a biochemical imbalance within brain cells as well as decreased blood flow and temporary energy deficits within the brain.
Post-Concussion Syndrome
Sometimes people continue to have concussion symptoms months after their injury. If you have had a concussion in the past that has resulted in ongoing symptoms persisting longer than 1-3 months after injury, you may be experiencing post-concussion syndrome.
Treatment and Management
If you have sustained a concussion, a thorough examination is completed to assess physical capacity, visual and vestibular dysfunction, and cervical spine function. Individualized rehabilitation and treatment strategies are implemented depending on the examination findings and, if a baseline test has previously been done, aimed at returning the client to their pre-injury measurements.
Our services include:
• Comprehensive baseline testing
• Post-injury diagnosis and injury management
• Concussion rehabilitation for chronic symptoms or post-concussion syndrome
Our treatment programs are tailored specifically to each patient and their goals, returning them to their everyday life activities without limitations. We take the time to listen to your unique challenges and design a program to meet your individual needs and help you to take control of your recovery.
A concussion is not something you can ignore. Regardless of the perceived severity, following a brain injury it is incredibly important that you check in with a physician to ensure that there is no potential for lasting brain damage. If you or a loved one have experienced a concussion, contact Elevation Health Physiotherapy to learn more about concussion treatment and therapy options.
What is baseline testing?
At Elevation Health, we conduct SCAT 5 and CHILD-SCAT 5 baseline testing, Cranial Nerve Testing, Neck Range of Motion + Concussion Symptom Assessments. In order to truly know the effects of a concussion, and to most accurately advise on your healing progress, a persons baseline cognitive test (pre concussion score) is what is best to compare against after concussion symptoms are present.
If you are questioning if you or your child may have experienced a concussion, stay calm and call our clinic as we also provide treatment to facilitate a proper recovery and are experienced in providing you with return to learn and play protocols.
Baseline testing is a series of physical and cognitive tests that provides a pre-injury overview of an individuals healthy brain function. The reason that the test is termed a “baseline” is that it is done BEFORE one gets injured therefore is the gold standard to compare their post concussion results to. Each persons baseline test offers healthcare practitioners an objective benchmark to strive to help return that person to. In order to know when one has fully recovered, we first have to know where they were pre concussion. Without having this information, there remains questions to truly know when an individual has fully recovered to their normal cognitive and physical levels and when it is safe to return to their sport. Following a suspected concussion, a player should be immediately removed from play, assessed, and placed on complete rest in order to recover from the energy deficit. Studies have shown that any activity, both mental and physical, in the immediate days following concussion can delay the process of recovery and should be avoided until completely symptom-free. Baseline concussion testing is an important step to complete prior to beginning your sports (contact or non contact) season. Recommended for ages 5 and up and to complete every two years for children.
